Franklin Security Bank recommends that customers follow these safety tips when using any ATM:
Keep your PIN number (Personal Identification Number) private. This ensures that your ATM card will be useless to anyone but you. Never write it down or share it with anyone-not even family members. [back to top]
When selecting a PIN number, do not use numbers or letters that can be associated with you. Do not use your initials, birth date telephone number or home address. Change your PIN often. [back to top]
Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. Make sure the ATM is in a well-lit area, free of sight obstructions, like shrubbery or decorative dividers. If the area is poorly lit or if you observe suspicious persons or circumstances, do not use the machine. [back to top]
Bring someone with you when using an ATM at night. If you can’t, use an ATM that is located in a public area like a convenience store or grocery store. [back to top]
If you are using a drive-up ATM, keep all doors locked and passenger-side and rear windows rolled up. [back to top]
If you leave your car and walk to the ATM:
- do not leave your car engine running.
- lock your car.
- have your ATM card ready and in your hand as you approach the ATM.
- if it is an in-door ATM, look inside before entering. Don’t let anyone enter who you do not know.
- use your body to “shield” the ATM keyboard as you enter your PIN.
- do NOT count or visually display any money. Immediately put your money into your pocket or purse and count it later.
- ALWAYS take your receipts or transaction records with you.

Debit Card Safety
- Be sure Internet merchants have proper security measures in place. Look for online security signs, such as a paddle lock and key in the bottom corner, a site address that begins https://, or the words Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
- If you’re unsure, call their customer service number to ask or place your order.
- Don’t write your PIN on or near your card. It’s best to memorize it and NOT write it anywhere.
- If you sign a receipt that has a carbon, keep the carbon or tear it up. Do not discard it intact.
- Before you leave on a vacation, notify us of your travel dates and destination. We have extra fraud protection on your card that alerts us to “unusual” transactions, and location is part of the alert.
- Only give your card number over the phone when you initiate the call.
Use your credit card for shopping online:
- Most experts recommend using your credit card instead of a debit card when shopping online, because credit cards come with better consumer protections in case of fraud or billing disputes.
